Firstly you need to check that all the equipment you have is up to the job. Listed are a few of the main points: 1) THE WINCH: Is it the correct voltage and is big enough for the job as there is a risk of damaging the winch if you try and pull more than was intended. 2) THE BUMPER OR MOUNTING PLATE: Is it suitable for the winch you have and is it securely attached to the vehicle. 3) BATTERY CABLE: Is the cabling you have suitable for the winch, are they long enough etc.

When buying a new winch it is very important to understand how it works, how to operate it safely and to know a few key pointers that can ensure you don’t damage your winch through misuse causing costly winch repairs.
Whilst winches are built to withstand most things thrown at them including water and mud, they are not designed to be completely waterproof and operate underwater for long periods of time. It is our recommendation that if you plan on storing the winch outside permanently, you invest in a winch cover. They are very effective at keeping out moisture and preventing expensive repair bills.
